History

275 years ago a tract of land that at the time was a part of Lancaster, was set aside and incorporated as a seperate town - it was named Leominster.

The first settlement in the tract (Leominster) was made by Gershom Houghton in 1725 followed by many others after.

12 years after the first settlement in 1737, the inhabitants of the Town of Leominster decided after long deliberation that they were able to conduct their own politial and religious affairs in a more economical manner than how it was being done at the time so they applied to the General Court for an act of incorporation which was finally obtained after many petitions had been presented. The incorporation of the Town of Leominster was passed on June 23rd, O.S., 1740, which date was the same as the July 4th, N.S. Leominster is exactly 36 years older to the date, of our Nation!

On July 9th or July 20th, the first town meeting was held at Jonathan White's house who was the Innholder of the Town. At the meeting, all  officers necessary to conduct the town affairs were elected. Town meetings were held quite often after this until everything was arrainged and all the needs of the town were provided.
